MADE-BY is a European not-for-profit organisation with a mission to improve environmental and social conditions in the fashion industry and make sustainability common practice.

MADE-BY was launched in 2004 in direct response to rising consumer concern in Europe over social and environmental issues in the fashion industry. The organisation was founded by Solidaridad, a leading Dutch and international NGO that has been an innovator and driving force in fair trade and environmental issues.

Driven by a commitment to sustainable fashion, we work with fashion and textile brands who want to improve sustainability across their entire supply chain, from raw materials through to finished products.  We help to communicate the brand’s progress in a transparent way that is easily understood by the consumer, the media and the industry through our tools that include our Scorecards and the Blue Button Label. We also support brands which may already have a CSR department in-house but need specialist support on specific sustainability projects.

The combination of expertise in the fashion industry and the approach to assessment makes us unique. Our team and partners work across the world, undertaking social and environmental improvement projects with brand suppliers.  We seek to help address a wide range of global issues including child labour, unsafe working conditions, pesticides in cotton farming and water usage in dyeing houses.  Within brands we also run workshops to help designers and buyers source and plan in a socially and environmentally conscious way.

We believe that sharing best practice and encouraging progress is vital to success. This is why we encourage brands to embark on a journey towards improved standards (rather than work towards a pass or fail assessment). Improving entire production chains and building bridges between the brands and suppliers takes time. It is therefore important that this process is transparent and communicated clearly.
