What is MODE Tracker?

MODE Tracker is the most professional sustainability strategy setting, road mapping and performance-tracking tool, tailor made for fashion brands and retailers.

It was designed in collaboration with industry professionals and sustainability experts.

It recognises business reality, it provides a flexible approach for any organisation to: baseline performance; prioritise improvement efforts; track progress; and gain wider stakeholder buy-in.

With a choice of eight cubes, the brand can choose where to start with the knowledge that they currently have and can aspire to eventually cover the whole of their operations.

Each topic (cube) reflects the different levels of brand engagement from regulatory compliance to industry best practice. MODE Tracker utilises a basic five scale colour indicator, (‘dark green’ to ‘dark orange’) to communicate the depth and breadth of brand engagement.

Created with industry professionals and sustainability experts, and refined over many years, the guidance within the tools enables internal teams to take meaningful steps along an improvement pathway.

External validation from MADE-BY, backed by highly professional reporting tools enables effective internal reporting as well as highly credible external reporting opportunities.

MADE-BY continuously strives to ensure MODE Tracker is both relevant to your teams and externally credible.

What is verified at each of the levels?

MADE-BY has completed extensive research on sustainability engagement of apparel and footwear brands to identify 3 levels of engagement on each topic (cube):

Level 1 – Building a foundation and setting ambition

Level 2 – Making steady progress

Level 3 – Best practice

  • There is also a 4th level – the Pioneer. Brands that demonstrate outstanding industry leadership receive special commendation, indicated by the flag icon (left).

How does it work?
  • Brands identify which of the defined topic areas of their sustainability engagement MADE-BY will verify (a minimum 3 Cubes with People and Product being mandatory).
  • Brands and retailers are able to submit evidence in two ‘rounds’ – provisional and final.
  • In the provisional round, MADE-BY will review evidence and then communicate the verified performance on the cubes with the brand.
  • The brand is then given time to reflect on the report and has the opportunity to provide additional information (where applicable).
  • MADE-BY allows for the submission of additional evidence during a specific time period.
  • Once this additional evidence is considered, the brand’s final verification report will be shared with the brand.
  • The MODE Tracker results are published on MADE-BYs website: made-by.org/modetracker

How is it verified?

MADE-BY completes a review of the data and information provided by brands in order to define the level of engagement on specific topics and performance within those levels.

Each Cube verification has a team of verifiers, a lead verifier and peer reviewer.  The lead verifier carries out the initial assessment, and then all verification decisions are reviewed by a separate peer reviewer to ensure the scoring of evidence is consistent.

To ensure the verification is both independent and impartial the verification team has direct contact with the Brand.

What are the commitments?

Every MODE Tracker brand or retailer commits to:

  • Work with MADE-BY to submit and verify evidence for a minimum of three cubes (always including People and Product cubes) over at least three years
  • Communicate progress through annual MODE Tracker scorecard publication from at least the second year

MADE-BY commits to robust and independent evidence-based verification. The process is designed to use a brand’s existing data and documents, rather than requiring completion of specific surveys or creation of new documents. This frees up time for the brand to focus on making progress. We evaluate the brand against three levels of activity:

Level 1 evaluates a brand’s basic engagement, including setting a strategy and creating a baseline – the foundational elements needed to make consistent year-on-year progress.

Level 2 examines how a brand puts their level 1 commitments into action. This includes setting targets, investing in capabilities, and collaboration with the broader industry.

Level 3 is stretching and evaluates adoption of best practice, often in arenas beyond the brand’s immediate control, e.g., supplier capability building and consumer engagement.

Pioneer: Brands that demonstrate outstanding industry leadership receive special commendation, indicated by the flag icon.

These scores are then weighted depending on impact of each criteria on sustainability performance. This methodology has been tested by 50 recognised industry experts.

What happens when a brand achieves 100% across all levels?

For those brands who have achieved 100% at all levels, it indicates that, for that time period, the brand is an industry leader.

Is it possible for brands to drop in score?

Yes. We verify data and activities for a given year.  If the brand has not carried out activities in line with the framework then they will not be awarded a score.  The idea of MODE Tracker is not ‘penalise’ brands but to help ensure they continue on its sustainability journey.

Are brands given any consultancy on how to improve its score?

In order to maintain their impartiality, the verifier cannot give consultancy advice as part of the verification process. The verification of MODE Tracker remains separate from the consultancy services and packages MADE-BY can offer.  Brands are able to contact the MADE-BY team should they need further consultation.

What would happen if the Brand disagreed with the scoring?

If a brand disagrees with its score they may lodge a formal appeal with the MADE-BY board.

How regularly will MADE-BY update the requirements?

MADE-BY will review the content of each of the cubes annually, to ensure they are up to date with sustainability developments, particularly areas of best practice in level 3. We expect level 1 and 2 requirements to remain largely unchanged as these cover foundational systems, and core activities to make steady progress.

Why is there a MODE Tracker Advisory Panel?

MADE-BY has acquired over 13 years knowledge and expertise in the sustainability issues facing the fashion industry. This includes valuable knowledge and deep insight into the global supply chains of brands and their sub-suppliers and has been exemplified by the consultancy services, packages and public tools developed (or co-developed) by MADE-BY. This expertise has been used to define the topic areas, levels and the weighting and scoring applied to these topic areas.

We have reached out to industry professionals to support our knowledge and expertise.  We have included external experts to help verify the content defined within each topic area.
