Marleen Rameckers discovered that playing with soft textiles and the labels on clothing and stuffed animals helped to calm her child. Deciding to incorporate her own experience into baby products, she founded Snoozebaby back in 2005. Rameckers first collection consisted of soft, cuddly squares of fabric with labels made of different textiles attached to it. There are now eight product categories, ranging from bed linen to cuddly toys, all featuring the characteristic child-friendly labels incorporated into the design. The Snoozebaby products are not only fashionable, trendy and beautiful to look at, but they also stimulate young children’s fine motor skills, particularly fostering their tactile sense. They offer comfort and are calming to babies. All the designs are created in Holland, where Snoozebaby has its headquarters. Distributors deliver its high-quality baby products around the world to gift shops, design stores, children's boutiques, home interior/décor stores, bookshops and toy stores. Snoozebaby introduces new articles to the line twice a year and its products are now available in more than 450 shops in 20 countries. MADE-BY has been working on a number of initiatives with Snoozebaby, including helping it to improve the working conditions in its factory in China. |
“We put some pressure on the factory once due to a deadline,” explains Rameckers. “My contact emailed me back, ‘We’re working day and night to finish the job’. I realised then that it was my responsibility too; I needed to plan for more time so their time doesn’t get squeezed. They have no restrictions in terms of working hours. We may not be the cheapest on the market, but we can confidently now say that the employees in our factory are not being exploited.” MADE-BY has ensured that all seamstresses, sewers and cotton pickers who contribute to Snoozebaby products work under safe and fair conditions. Furthermore, a portion of the company’s turnover is donated to the charity Stitching Max and since the summer of 2009, Snoozebaby has been offering products made of organic cotton. “The switch was fairly uncertain, because there was no way to know how the price of organic cotton would develop,” says Rameckers. “Unquestionably organic cotton would more expensive, but working in cooperation with MADE-BY means that we don’t have to search through a tangled maze of prices before we can find a good deal.” |
