La Siesta joined MADE-BY at the end of 2009 so the first full year of the partnership was 2010. La Siesta offers a wide variety of hammocks and hammock chairs, focusing on traditional craftsmanship of Latin America under the following ranges: ‘Colombia’, ‘Brazil’, ‘Mexico’, ‘North American Style’, ‘Baby’, ‘Kids’, ‘Travel’ and ‘Accessories’.
Social Conditions in Factories La Siesta has established good and reliable partnerships with suppliers, mainly located in Latin America, who make their handmade hammocks and similar products. As yet none of their suppliers scored within the MADE-BY Social Benchmark; however La Siesta is currently looking into possibilities for social auditing or certification projects with their suppliers, supporting their key supplier in preparing for social certification which they hope to gain in 2011.
Environmental Impact of Raw Materials In 2010 10.4% of all material used was organic cotton and scores Class B in the MADE-BY Scorecard, 85.7% was conventional cotton (Class E) and the remaining few percent were split between Polyacryl (Class D) and Polypropylene, that are scored as unclassified. La Siesta’s 100% certified organic cotton hammocks are predominantly produced in Colombia, with a small proportion in India. Due to limited supply of suitable organic yarn in Colombia, La Siesta are currently importing organic cotton yarn from Turkey and India, however the founder, Mr Alexander Grisar, initiated his own organic cotton farming project in Colombia this year (www.socila.eu). The metal and wooden sections of their products do not get scored, however most of them are FSC certified. La Siesta also changed their packaging material and methods to use recycled paper, less material overall and much less volume, resulting in a decreased environmental impact when shipping.
