The very first product put out in the Dutch market by Nomad in the 1980s was a sleeping bag. A really compact one, in blue and yellow. It was a huge success, and since then the Nomad brand has evolved into a total concept label for travel. Nomad now produces tents, backpacks, sleeping mats and much, much more. The company organises its own expeditions, and twice a year it releases a new collection of travelwear. Its product range is divided into four categories: Protection (clothing, shoes); Carry (backpacks, travel bags); Rest (tents, sleeping bags and mats) and Discovery (unusual travel and hot air balloon flights). “Functional but fashionable”, is how company director Barry Kooijmans describes Nomad. “After all, you still want to look good at that little restaurant on the other side of the world.” Nomad’s primary source of inspiration has been the gap-year student travelling the world before beginning his or her first job. A traveller that needs to be prepared for the unexpected and be well-organised. It is with this truly independent traveller in mind that the brand designs its jackets, trousers, shorts, socks, sweaters and shirts. With support from MADE-BY, the cotton used in the summer collection of tops has been replaced with an organic variety. At the same time, Nomad’s largest Chinese manufacturing plant has been socially certified. |
“We wanted to start with the projects that generated the biggest results most quickly,” explains Kooijmans. “If you are going to do something, then you have to it well. In recent years we have been totally focused upon establishing the product range. Now that that is in place, we can start working seriously and intensively on making our production more sustainable.” As the producer of travel equipment, it was only natural that Nomad takes responsibility for the sustainable production of its products. The company is striving to maximize the social conditions in the countries where it produces, and this includes fair pay, well organised working hours with sufficient breaks, and creating a clean and safe working environment. In addition, Nomad works to protect nature as much as possible as far as the production process and the materials it uses are concerned. Nomad also works with Trees for Travel, the organisation that neutralizes the emission of greenhouse gases through the planting of trees. Nomad products are available in stores across Europe, as well as online. |
