Alchemist is a womenswear brand with a mission of combining high-fashion with an ethical lifestyle. They became a MADE-BY partner in 2005.
Social Conditions in Factories Alchemist produced the majority of their 2010 collection in low-risk European countries, scoring 74% Class A in their Social Scorecard. The remaining 26% of their production is unclassified and was produced in Turkey and the Far East, where Alchemist’s order volumes are too small to
have leverage in influencing the suppliers’ social compliance standards, however through personal visits and clear communication of their Code of Conduct, Alchemist aim to influence change with their suppliers where possible.
Environmental Impact of Raw Materials In 2010, Alchemist continued to increase the use of TENCEL®; a natural man-made fibre produced in an environmentally mindful process from woodpulp cellulose, in their collection, substituting this for its less sustainable counterpart, viscose. This meant that their percentage of Class B fibres was increased compared to the previous year, however due to escalated raw material prices, their organic cotton usage unfortunately decreased, minimising the overall increase of Class B fibres to 39% (a 6% increase from 2009), and slightly increasing their Class E fibre percentage by 5%.
